Maybe you think successful entrepreneurs know everything about everything.  Maybe you think they know something about everything.  I’m here to say they know just a little about everything.  Entrepreneurs as I have found out are not subject experts.  There are exceptions and I’ll get to that later.  The majority though know enough about a particular skill and delegate it.  They spend the rest of the time marketing and selling their business.

Why is that?

The saying “Jack Of All Trades, Master Of None” would be the correct way to describe entrepreneurs.  As an entrepreneur, your main task is to build the company, or maybe start an internet business and sustain it by making a profit.  That’s it.  If your business is web design, you as the entrepreneur should not be doing the coding or design for each project.  If you spent all your time doing that, who will go out to get more business?  It certainty can’t be someone you hire because they don’t know your business well enough.  In the beginning though, you might need to do a bit of everything and that’s OK.  But as the company grows, the entrepreneur should start to think more and more about the company itself- the vision, the goals, the five and ten year plans, the culture, etc.

The rest of the stuff is delegated to someone else to handle.  And that’s the way it should be.  Can you imagine if Bill Gates was still doing the programming for projects like Windows 7?  If he did, we probably would not have gotten the XBox as no one would have foreseen that the gaming console was an area that Microsoft could profit from.  Of course Bill Gates is the exception to the rule and he is rare.  He was exceptionally skilled at programming by the time he was in high school.  But once he started Microsoft, he did less of it and focused more on the vision of the company.

So Then What Do They Know?

So if they don’t know a specific skill, what do they know?  They know the industry.  They know it forwards and backwards.  They know the trends, the competitors, the amount of money spent in the industry (which translates to the potential size of the market), etc.  They know things like that- what is necessary to grow the company.  And how do they do that?  They talk to people in the industry.  They do market research by asking their current and potential customers all kinds of questions.  Even then though, they know just enough to move forward with their ideas.  The thing about entrepreneurship is that you can never know everything and that suits the entrepreneur well.
